And so it begins...
Leah comes to town to visit Clayton’s grave. Before the Bauer barbecue Rick & Mel see her and instantly realize that’s their son Jude. Leah cries thinking they’d reject her. They take her to the Bauer home for the Bauer barbecue where Ed & Maureen welcome their granddaughter. Michelle feels uneasy and expresses this to Rick. The siblings talk about how not accepting Leah could really do harm to her and their family. Michelle welcomes Leah. At Company Leah is nervous people will recognize her. Michelle tells her to face her fears. Buzz recognizes her, but doesn’t want to let on. Bill snidely remarks about her to which Michelle blasts him for talking down to her niece. Bill is unapologetic with his opinion, and Michelle slaps him. Leah leaves and bumps into Shayne. Upset she goes off on him telling him she’s a transwoman, and he should stay away. Shayne follows her to Fifth Street where she breaks down crying. He comforts her and tells her he thinks she’s beautiful no matter what her gender identity is. They kiss. Vanessa gets off the phone and tells Billy, Jude Bauer is now Leah Bauer. Billy wonders how he’d react if Bill or Mindy transitioned. Vanessa tells him he’d be supportive just like she would. At work Billy tells Josh who says he’s only worried if Shayne transitioned due to how others would treat him; he calls Reva. Reva has an idea to have Leah on her show to force Springfield to get over their transphobia. She goes looking for her and sees her kissing Shayne on Fifth Street. Shayne tells Reva he and Leah are dating. Shayne brings Leah to dinner with Josh, Reva, and Marah. Outside Reva tells Leah not to hurt Shayne; Leah promises.
Rick and Mel discuss Leah’s transsexuality while Rick talks to Philip and Mel talks to Harley & Blake. Rick and Mel attend a Parents of Transgender People support group along with Ed and Maureen. At the Bauer barbecue Ed and Maureen decide to reintroduce Leah to her friends and family in Springfield. Rick and Mel invite someone from Human Resource Campaign to dictate as Leah does and establishes what pronouns to call her. Michelle states she will move back into her old bedroom and Leah can move into the garage apartment; Leah asks Shayne to move with her. Josh, Reva, and Marah help Shayne move in with Leah.
Jenna longing for “the good life” stumbles on a secret about Carmen. She goes to Carmen and tells her she will expose her secret if she doesn’t sign her to be at Powerhouse Modeling. Carmen hires her as Booking Agent; Jenna begins living the high life again and slowly pulls away from Buzz. Buzz works and spends dinners at Frank & Eleni. Carmen runs drugs through her modeling agency only aware to Danny and paying AJ off. While Danny meets Michelle at Company for the first time and falls for her. She is aware of his family’s rumored mob ties, but Danny denies it and pursues her having flowers show up at her work, buying her a dress delivered to her home, and paying off her car debt. Carmen tells Danny to “fix” Jenna. Danny focuses his attention to Michelle and working and tells Carmen to get a life.
Frank & Eleni try planning romantic dates together, but between work and Buzz they can’t find time together. Marina takes Buzz out for dinner so Frank & Eleni can be alone to celebrate their anniversary. Frank & Eleni try setting Marina up with dates while AJ makes fun of her. Nola calls AJ out for his feelings for Marina; AJ asks Marina out, but she says no. Eleni overhears the conversation and goes to AJ to tell him not to give up. AJ does something big to get Marina’s attention; she finally says yes to going on a date with him. Harley and Mallet decide to try having a baby.
At Quint's birthday Nola tells Vanessa that Bill’s behavior is deplorable. Vanessa says although she disagrees with Bill he’s entitled to his opinion. Bill leaves; Vanessa yells at Nola. Nola quibs Bill is in love with Leah secretly and recalls growing up seeing Bill fascinated with Leah as Jude. Vanessa defends Bill saying her son isn’t gay or he’d tell her. The two women get into an altercation. Vanessa reaches out to Rick and Mel whom tell them they always saw signs of Leah being “different.” Vanessa asks Nola’s help to finding out Bill’s true feelings for Leah. Billy faints; Vanessa is told Billy needs a heart transplant as his alcohol abuse has taken a toll on him. Meanwhile Vanessa is particularly harsh on Marah, her new Junior Assistant at Trends, as Marah tries skating on the familial bond. Vanessa lectures Marah that she got this job not because she’s family, but because she felt she was best qualified. She wonders if Marah is up for the task. Marah becomes a better assistant.
Ross and Blake’s sex life begins to dwindle. Upset Blake begins arguing with Ross. Ross collapses, and Ed realizes Ross has prostate cancer. He tells Ross who tells him not to tell Blake. Blake knows something is up and gets it out of Ross. She begins to feel bad how’s she’s been treating him.
Holly and Roger have an amicable dinner about their relationship over the years, and Roger tells Holly he wants to be back with her. She says no, but he tells her he’ll never give up. Holly & Reva talk about Roger; Reva tells Holly about Shayne & Leah. Holly tells Reva they can have Leah on the show, but won’t bring up Shayne. Reva approaches Carmen about Leah being on the show. Carmen wants Leah seen as normal and having relationships, but Reva refuses to use her son to further Carmen’s agenda. Carmen agrees to have Leah on, but calls Shayne to tell him Reva wants him on the show too.
Natalia and Amanda keep bumping into each other; Amanda then catches Natalia at Company waiting for an online date she’s being stood up for. They begin talking and hanging out. Alan-Michael questions Amanda’s friendship, and she admits she likes Natalia. Rafe questions Natalia’s friendship, and she says Amanda is just a friend.
(Freshman Year) Jason, Rafe, & Daisy deal with life at college. Jason joins a frat; Daisy joins a sorority; Rafe works at the college library for stipend while juggling soccer with Jason. When one of Daisy’s sorority sisters dies at a frat party Jason and Rafe bond.
